Steve Park would compete for Winston Cup Rookie of the Year honors in 1998 driving for Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. Pennzoil moved over from Bahari Racing to the newly renumbered #1 (was #14 in 1997). His season got off to a rough start with a DNQ at Las Vegas and a wreck at Atlanta. Phil Parsons would take over at Atlanta but did not qualify for the race. Ron Hornaday Jr. would drive the next week but he also did not qualify. Darrell Waltrip would then come on board from his recently sold team to fill in for the next 13 races. Park would return at Indianapolis.
Park would return to the team in 1999 and 2000. He earned his first career victory in 2000 at Watkins Glen and won at Rockingham in 2001.
Park would suffer a season ending crash at Darlington in the Busch Series race. Kenny Wallace would drive the #1 for the remainder of the 2001 season . Wallace would return for the first 4 races of 2002 until Park's return at Darlington.
DEI would switch to the "E Stripe" design in 2003.
