Mike Skinner joined the Winston Cup Series full time in 1997 in the new Richard Childress Racing #31. Lowe's came over from the Brett Bodine Racing to sponsor the new effort. Skinner would stay with the team through the 2001 season but missed some races.
Mike Dillon would drive the #31 in one race in 1998. Morgan Shepherd would drive in 2 races the same season.
Robby Gordon came on board for 4 races during the 2001 season while Skinner would recover from injury. He returned to the team at Kansas to drive the final 8 races of the season. He won in the season finale at New Hampshire for his first career Winston Cup victory.
